Recycling Center Drop-Off
The Town of Southern Shores does not have a drop-off location for recycling for residents or visitors since the Town offers curbside recycling service. County Recycling Center locations and information can be found here. There is also a recycling drop-off center in Kitty Hawk that is a joint venture of the Town of Kitty Hawk and Dare County. Any Dare County resident may bring regular materials for recycling to this location at no fee. Large Bulky Items from residents of Southern Shores require a permit. The cost to Southern Shores property owners for disposal of Large Bulky Items is $50 for a one-time use of half a pickup load (over a half-pick-up load will be rejected and will need to go to the Dare County C&D Landfill, usually at no charge). The permit must be purchased in person from Southern Shores Town Hall beforehand. Self-generated (not contractor-generated) construction and demolition debris.
PLEASE NOTE: Electronics, Appliances, and TVs do not require a permit.

MATERIALS ACCEPTED: Normal household recyclables may be taken at no charge. Look at a list of accepted items. PLEASE NOTE: The Kitty Hawk/Dare County Center site attendant will reject anything other than the household recyclable items listed.

Commercial Debris OR Lumber: may be taken to the Dare County C&D Landfill located at 1603 Cub Road, Manns Harbor, NC 27953, phone 252-473-2059
Hazardous Materials: Follow the manufacturer's label recommendations. *Recycle Batteries & Compact Fluorescent Bulbs at any Lowe's. *Dare County also holds household hazardous waste collection days- info here.
Hot Tubs & Covers: may be taken at no charge to the Dare County C&D Landfill
Mattresses, Box Springs: may be taken at no charge to the Dare County C&D Landfill
Paint: Dry out and dispose in regular household garbage
Regular Household Garbage: may be taken at no charge to the Dare County C&D Landfill

Styrofoam: Dispose in regular household garbage
