SCHEDULE-YEAR ROUND

The Town is divided into four (4) sectors. To locate your sector please see the alphabetical street listing in the Calendar below.

Each sector is serviced within one week, with collection completed by Saturday afternoon. Please refer to the Limb/Branch Calendar for sector pickup dates.  Service is weather-dependent, and delays may occur due to conditions such as wind, rain, extreme heat, or ice. Your patience is appreciated during these times.

Brush may be placed out for removal as early as the week prior to your scheduled pickup. All materials must be set out by Monday morning of your collection week, as the contractor will make only one pass per street.
 

GUIDELINES

  • The Limb/Branch Removal service is only available for brush cut by homeowners. The Limb/Branch Removal service is not for contractors, handymen, landscapers or anyone doing major lot clearing. Any pile exceeding the 12 x 4 will be considered major lot clearing. Contractors, Handymen, and Landscapers are responsible for their own brush removal.
  • One single pile of hand-stacked brush per month is allowed, not to exceed 12 ft. long and 4 ft. in height, with all cut ends facing towards the road - no exceptions. Any pile exceeding the 12 x 4 will be considered major lot clearing.
  • Piles of brush should be placed within 10 ft. of the roadside in front of your property only. No item placed on empty lots or cul-de-sac circle/islands will be collected.
  • Do not stack near utilities or fire hydrants.
  • Individual limbs can be up to 8 ft. long with a maximum limb diameter of 5 inches. The width across the branches of a single limb cannot exceed 3 feet.
  • Acceptable Brush: limbs, branches, and vines.
  • No stumps, leaves, pine straw, pine needles, grass clippings, lumber, roots, metal, trash, glass, string, concrete, rocks, etc.
  • Brush may be placed out for removal as early as the week before your scheduled sector. All brush must be out by Monday morning of your scheduled week as the contractor will only make one pass per street. Each sector will be completed in one week by Saturday afternoon. Service is weather dependent, patience is requested during stretches of wind, rain, heat, and ice which can disrupt schedules.

LEAVES, PINE STRAW, AND LAWN CLIPPINGS 

These must be taken to the Dare County Public Works Facility in Manteo. 1018 Driftwood Drive phone 252-475-5880. Bagged leaves are only collected during Bulk Waste Collection twice a year. More info below.

You can also take leaves, pine straw, lawn clippings, tree limb/branches/stumps etc to the C&D Landfill in Mann's Harbor. 1603 Cub Road phone 252-473-2059.


 

Christmas Tree Disposal

Christmas trees may be placed in your Limb/Branch piles for collection during your scheduled sector pickup. Wreaths will not be collected.

  • All decorations, lights, and metal components must be removed, or the contractor will reject collection.

Regular Household Garbage: may be taken, at no charge, to the Dare County C&D Landfill located at 1603 Cub Road, Manns Harbor, NC 27953.

There is NO location in Southern Shores that accepts household garbage or recycling.

Recycling drop off: regular household materials for recycling may be taken, at no fee, to the Kitty Hawk/Dare County Recycling Center located at 4190 Bob Perry Road, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949

There are no charges or fees for collection of trash or recycling. 

The homeowner is responsible for providing the carts/cans.

New homeowner or renter? To begin service, place the can curbside the night before collection.

Hazardous Materials: Follow the manufacturer's label recommendations. *Recycle Batteries & Compact Fluorescent Bulbs at any Lowe's. *Dare County also holds household hazardous waste collection days- info here.

Chemicals: Contact manufacturer

Paint: Dry out and dispose in regular household garbage

Mattresses: allowed during Bulk Pickup or Mattresses, Box Springs: may be taken at no charge to the Dare County C&D Landfill

Bagged Leaves: allowed during Bulk Waste Collection Day only: Yard waste/vegetative debris, and leaves bagged in clear plastic or brown paper bags only – any bags that are falling apart will be rejected and not collected ***Yard waste/vegetative debris, and leaves OUTSIDE OF Bulk Waste COLLECTION DAY must be taken to the Dare County Public Works Facility in Manteo or may be taken at no charge to the Dare County C&D Landfill.

Brush, Pine Needles, Pine Straw, Leaves & Lawn Clippings: may be taken at no charge to the Dare Co. Public Works Recycling facility or may be taken at no charge to the Dare County C&D Landfill

 

Recycling and Trash Carts are the personal property of the homeowner. Eventually the carts and their parts will wear out due to environmental exposure and usage. The Town of Southern Shores and the service provider do not provide free parts or carts. The Town provides the collection service, and the homeowner provides the cart.

To Purchase new or Additional cans: Please call Bay Disposal at 252-491-5105 to purchase trash cans and recycling cans and possible replacement parts. Payment is accepted over the phone. You may also order online by clicking here.


Please contact Bay Disposal for the removal of old or damaged cans.

Please stop by Town Hall to apply and pay for a Bulk Waste Permit.

The cost to Southern Shores property owners for disposal of Large Bulky Items is $50 for a one-time use of half a pickup load (over a half-pick up load will be rejected and will need to go to the Dare County C&D Landfill, usually at no charge).
