Bulk Waste Collection, Semi-Annual

The Town of Southern Shores schedules two (2) Bulk Waste collections each year. One in April and one in October.
 

Bulk Waste Collection is scheduled for Friday, April 17, 2026. Please place all approved items curbside by Thursday, April 16.

Residents may begin placing approved items only at the curb starting Friday, April 10. Items placed before this date are not permitted.
 

The October date for Bulk Waste Collection will be confirmed closer to the time.

Approved Bulk waste CAN include large items such as:

• Mattresses, Sofas, Chairs, Dressers, Furniture, etc.
• Exercise Equipment, Bicycles.
• Hot Tub Covers (no Hot Tubs).
• Grills, Appliances. Refrigerators, freezers, or any other appliances that contain refrigerant must be marked stating Freon has been removed (remove Freon and mark with highly visible marker or paint) If not marked it will not be collected. Please remove doors from refrigerators/freezers for safety.
• Yard waste/vegetative debris, and leaves bagged in clear plastic or brown paper bags only – any bags that are falling apart will be rejected and not collected. Yard waste/vegetative debris, and leaves OUTSIDE OF COLLECTION DAY must be taken to the Dare County Public Works Facility in Manteo. 1018 Driftwood Dr. 27954. Phone 252-475-5880.

These materials are NOT approved for collection:

• No item placed on empty lots or cul-de-sac circle/islands will be collected.
• No Televisions: may be taken at no charge to Kitty Hawk/Dare County Recycling Center or Dare County C&D Landfill.
• No Hot Tubs: may be taken at no charge to Dare County C&D Landfill.
• No Water Heaters: may be taken at no charge to Kitty Hawk/Dare County Recycling Center or Dare County C&D Landfill
• No Basketball Goal Posts: may be taken, with a $50 permit, to Kitty Hawk/Dare County Recycling Center or at no charge to Dare County C&D Landfill.
• No Untagged refrigerators or any appliances containing Freon: may be taken at no charge to Kitty Hawk/Dare County Recycling Center or Dare County C&D Landfill.
• No Hazardous materials such as Paints, Solvents, Chemicals, etc.: follow manufacturers label recommendations. *Recycle Batteries & Compact Fluorescent Bulbs at any Lowe's. *Dare County also holds household hazardous waste collection days- info here.
• No Lumber, Scrap Lumber, or any broken down furniture that resembles a pile of wood, No Building Materials, Roofing, Doors, Screens, Windows, Stairs, Carpet, Rugs, Cabinets, Toilets, Pallets, or Demolition debris: may be taken, with a $50 permit, to Kitty Hawk/Dare County Recycling Center or at no charge to Dare County C&D Landfill
• No Soil, Rocks, Concrete, and Stumps: may be taken at no charge to Dare County C&D Landfill.
• No Vehicle Tires, any item(s) containing Gasoline: Tires may be taken at no charge to Kitty Hawk/Dare County Recycling Center. Tires must be off the rim, from Residential sources only, Maximum 4 tires per visit.
• No items produced as a result of a contracted service or business.

Please do not place items at the roadside for large item pickup until one week before the scheduled collection date. Any items not collected by the contractor have been deemed unacceptable and must be removed and disposed of at your own expense. Residents are encouraged to take pride in their homes and be considerate of their neighbors.

Please note that the entire town is serviced in a single day, and collection may continue into the late evening hours. Do not contact Town Hall on the day of pickup regarding missed items, as crews may still be working. In addition, some trucks are assigned to collect specific materials, so remaining items may be picked up later by a different vehicle. If items have not been collected by the following day, please contact Town Hall for assistance.

Call Bay Disposal to confirm rates and availability for individual Special Bulk Waste pick-ups. 252-491-5105. There is a fee for this service. If the service is available, payment will be collected from you by Bay Disposal.
