As the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1, communities in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico were still cleaning up from last year’s devastating hurricanes. Dare County Emergency Management urges Outer Banks residents, visitors, and nonresident property owners to prepare for the next storm and sign up for emergency alerts. Subscribers can opt to receive a text, email, or a phone call in the event an emergency situation develops. Examples of emergency notifications that may be sent include: mandatory evacuation orders, reentry information, hurricane advisories and bulletins, emergencies disrupting vehicular/pedestrian traffic, and countywide post-disaster information.
Users can sign up and manage their subscription at www.darenc.com/emergencyalerts – choosing how time-sensitive messages are received and which devices, phone numbers and email addresses notifications are sent to. Alerts can also be sent based on address. Including a home address, work address, and the addresses of any additional properties owned in Dare County, will ensure users receive notification of situations impacting those specific areas.
The Towns of Manteo, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Southern Shores and Duck are currently using the system as well; allowing emergency alert subscribers to opt-in to receive alerts from the municipalities. Most recently the Town of Duck sent alert notifications to subscribers when a black bear was spotted on the beach in May 2018.
