Town Chipping Program

The Town has a chipping and clearing program.  The chipping contractor (Atlantic Tree) chips and removes brush found at the edge of the right-of-way.  In addition, the contractor clears the canopy to a height of 15 feet above the street and 10 feet above the multi-use paths.

The chipping and clearing program is designed to maintain the exceptional beauty and quality of life in our Town.  Plus, keeping the rights-of-way and tree canopy properly cleared allows emergency vehicles (fire trucks, etc.) access to your home in case of emergency, and cleared rights-of-way make driving, bicycling and walking safer for everyone.  Finally, when we all keep our properties maintained, we reduce fire hazards and health problems, everyone’s property has increased in value, and we have greater pride in our Town.

Here are some ground rules and tips we’d appreciate your following:

  • The Town is divided into four (4) sectors, (see sector map) each sector will be completed in one week. Chipping is done nine months out of the year. No chipping June, July and August. The sectors and the schedules are as follows: (A map can be found at Town Hall also)
  • Real Christmas Trees will be chipped by our chipping contractor as he does his normal once a week chipping. Please remove all decoration and wire, place out on the town right of way please secure from blowing into the street.

Sector #1 - All of Chicahauk, (except Sea Oats Lane ) Juniper Tr. and all side streets - first week of each month from September through May;

Sector #2 - S. Dogwood Tr., N. Dogwood Tr. and all their side streets, Duck Woods Dr., Fairway Dr.-second week of each month from September through May;

  • Chipping is only available for brush cut by homeowners. This chipping service is not for contractors or anyone doing major lot clearing. Contractors are responsible for their own brush removal.*
  • Piles of brush can be 15 ft. long and 4 ft. in height, with all cut ends facing toward the road. Piles of brush should be placed within 10 ft. of the roadside. All brush is to be stacked by hand only on your property unless you have written permission to place it on a neighboring lot. Do not stack near utilities or fire hydrants. You may place the brush out no earlier than one week before and no later than noon Monday of your week. * This is important because the Town will be mowing the rights-of-way and doing street work the following week after chipping.
  • Individual limbs can be up to 8 ft. long with a maximum limb diameter of 5 inches. The width across the branches of a single limb cannot exceed 3 feet.
  • DO NOT place anything out other than limbs, branches and vines to be chipped. No leaves, grass clippings, lumber, roots, stumps, metal, trash, glass, string, concrete, rocks, etc. *

*It is a violation to place brush in the Town rights-of-way and in accordance to Town Code sections 6-26 - 6-31 and sections 6-201; 6-203;6-204 and 6-205. A civil penalty shall be issued upon failure to remove brush. Following the issuance of a said violation citation.

Contact Town Hall 252-261-2394 or msmith@southernshores-nc.gov with any questions and/or suggestions for improvement.

Chips are available for delivery to residents by calling Town Hall at 261-2394 or email info@southernshores-nc.gov. They will only be dumped at those locations who have called Town Hall and that have a sign saying "chips" in clear view of driver.
