Notice of Cama Major Permit Application

The Town of Southern Shores is applying for a Coastal Area Management Act (CAMA) Major permit, administered by the North Carolina Division of Coastal Management, to mechanically dredge remaining five and one-half miles of the Town's public canal system. The mechanical dredging will utilize barge-mounted long-reach excavators with placement of spoil in barges for transport off-site.

The Town's canal bottoms are proposed to be dredged to either four and five foot depths with a width of approximately thirty feet. These depths will be graduated to permit flushing into the deeper waters of Ginguite Creek. Dredging within the canal system will be based upon a centerline alignment and the width may vary depending upon the existing width of the canal and any impeding existing structures (piers, boat lifts, mooring pilings, bulkheads, etc). Existing structures may present obstacles to the dredging and as a result some areas of the canal will not be dredged to the full width as proposed. Buffers from any existing structure will be observed in order to minimize any possible undermining or damage to private structures. Boat owners will be notified to remove their vessels from the canals prior to commencement of dredging activities.

The proposed dredging is expected to produce approximately forty thousand cubic yards of dredge spoil material. The dredge spoil material is proposed to be disposed of off-site and outsie the corporate limits of the Town of Southern Shores.

This is notice of application for a permit only.

This project has not yet been funded by the Town of Southern Shores .

Attached is a map highlighting the proposed canals to be dredged.
