Southern Shores Beaches

Have fun at the Southern Shores beaches. You can go to Water to check ocean water temperature. Red warning flags are posted on aluminum poles every half mile along the beach when it is unsafe and illegal to swim. Persons using surfboards must have them leashed to their bodies to protect others. You do have to watch out for ripcurrents. Surf Rescue provides life guard services along our Atlantic Ocean beaches from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Lifeguard stands are staffed at Hillcrest Drive beach and at Chicahauk Trail beach. There will also be two roaming patrols on 4-wheel ATV's. Lifeguards are on duty daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Southern Shores Civic Association has a soundside wading beach off of N. Dogwood Trail that is very good for little children. To check swimming advisories go to Advisories .

The Town has a program allowing permanent residents of the Town and non-resident property owners to receive a Town Parking Permit (sticker) if they desire, at no charge and good for one year. There is no parking allowed on the streets of Southern Shores except for those streets where there is a duly erected sign marking designated Town parking areas. This permit allows you to park in those designated Town parking areas which are primarily at beach accesses. You cannot park in these areas without the permit and will be ticketed if you do. The Town Parking Permit is not authorized in private parking areas such as those operated by the Southern Shores Civic Association or the Chicahauk Property Owners Association, both of which have their own systems of parking passes for their properties. To obtain a Town parking decal fill out application and mail in or stop by Town Hall.

Dogs are not permitted on the beaches from May 15th to September 15th. When dogs are allowed they must be on a leash and cleaned up after.

The Police Department enforces regulations for use of Personal Watercraft (PWC) in the canals and Sound during the summer season.

Please e-mail, telephone or fax us with your questions and comments on Town matters. The Town Hall Office is open Monday - Friday 8:30 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. We are always happy to hear from you and try to respond to questions promptly .
